As fast as science and technology are progressing, the nature,
form of things, people's attitudes and the way of services are changing.
There is hardly one who doesn't want to travel by plane or
helicopter. Imagine for a moment that you are in a plane that takes off and
lands like a helicopter, but is not noisy nor expensive and emits no smoke or
pollution, how about that?
Yes, it's just a matter of time.
Then there will be a very similar conveyance which is being developed by
experts, called eVTOL (Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Vehicle).
Initially with a relatively short journey and seating capacity for
a few people, the firms that make these electric aircraft believe that the
public will soon be in demand for these rides.
They argue that eVTOL aircraft will reduce the cost of flying
because their electric motors are cheaper to operate and maintain than
helicopter engines.
Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace is one firm hoping to make a name
for itself in this new industry.

Its VX4 aircraft took off for the first time early last year. It
was tethered to the ground for its first flight. Thus, it hovered in the air for
only ten minutes.
But the real breakthrough will come this year with a series of
test flights. Instead of a vertical takeoff, the aircraft will fly forward at
higher altitudes and at higher speeds. Yes, the mid-decade would see the VX4
flying high with passengers.
Germany-based Volocopter plans to conduct public flight tests of
its Volocity model next year. It hopes to receive the aircraft's certificate of
approval in 2024 and then begin flights to Singapore, Paris and Rome.
Lilium plans to make the first production version of its eVTOL
next year. Germany-based Lilium has tested five prototype aircraft since 2017.

Instead of using rotors like the Vertical Aerospace and
Volocopter, the Lilium uses 30 electric jets that can tilt synchronously to
swing between vertical and forward flight.
The major hurdle for all these projects is getting certification
from aviation regulators, a difficult and expensive process that can take
years.
