Samsung Galaxy A34 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A34 5G is one of
the latest mid-range smartphones from the Korean giant, released in March 2023.
It boasts a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display, a triple camera setup with OIS, a
5,000mAh battery, and 5G connectivity. It also has an IP67 rating for dust and
water resistance, a feature that is rare in this price segment. But how does it
perform in real life? Is it worth buying? Let's find out in this review.

Design and Display

The Galaxy A34 5G has a simple and
sleek design, with a glastic finish that mimics glass but is actually plastic.
The phone comes in four colours: Awesome Lime, Awesome Silver, Awesome Violet
and Awesome Graphite. The lime variant that we have for this review is a
refreshing change from the usual black or white options, and it looks quite
attractive in person.

The phone has a rectangular camera
module on the back, which houses three lenses and an LED flash. There is also a
Samsung logo at the bottom. The front of the phone is dominated by the 6.6-inch
display, which has a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera on the top center.
The bezels are fairly thin on all sides, except for the chin which is slightly
thicker.

The phone has a plastic frame that
curves around the edges, making it comfortable to hold. On the right side,
there is a power button and a volume rocker. On the left side, there is a
hybrid SIM tray that can accommodate two nano-SIM cards or one nano-SIM card
and one microSD card (up to 1TB). On the bottom, there is a USB Type-C port, a
speaker grille and a microphone. On the top, there is another microphone and
nothing else.

The phone does not have a 3.5mm
headphone jack, which may disappoint some users who prefer wired headphones.
However, it does have stereo speakers that produce decent sound quality and
loudness. The phone also has an under-display optical fingerprint scanner that
works well most of the time, but can be slow or inaccurate at times.

The display of the Galaxy A34 5G is
one of its main highlights. It is a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a
resolution of 1080x2340 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The display is
bright, vibrant and smooth, with excellent contrast and viewing angles. It
supports up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness in high brightness mode (HBM),
which makes it easy to see even in direct sunlight.

The display also supports HDR10+
content, which enhances the colour and contrast of compatible videos and games.
The display has a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection that prevents scratches
and cracks from minor drops and impacts. The display also has an adaptive mode
that automatically adjusts the refresh rate based on the content being
displayed, which helps save battery life.

Performance and Software

The Galaxy A34 5G is powered by the
MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset, which is a 6nm octa-core processor with two
Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.6GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz.
The chipset also has a Mali-G68 MC4 GPU for graphics performance.

The phone comes with two
memory/storage options: 6GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/256GB storage. The
storage can be expanded via a microSD card slot (up to 1TB). The phone also
supports 5G connectivity on both SIM slots (SA/NSA/Sub6), as well as Wi-Fi (dual-band),
Bluetooth (5.3), NFC (market/region dependent), GPS (GLONASS/GALILEO/BDS) and
USB OTG.

The performance of the Galaxy A34
5G is impressive for its price range. The phone handles multitasking smoothly,
with no noticeable lag or stuttering. The phone can run most games at high
settings without any issues, thanks to the powerful chipset and GPU. The phone
also stays cool even after prolonged usage, thanks to its efficient thermal
management.

The software of the Galaxy A34 5G
is Android 13 with One UI 5.1 on top. One UI is Samsung's custom skin that adds
many features and customizations to the stock Android experience. Some of these
features include Dark Mode, Edge Panels, Always On Display, Bixby Routines,
Game Launcher, Secure Folder, Knox Security and more.

One UI also has a clean and
intuitive interface that adapts to different screen sizes and orientations. It
also has regular security updates and software support from Samsung for at
least three years. One UI also has some pre-installed apps from Samsung and
Google, as well as some third-party apps like Netflix, Spotify and Facebook
that can be uninstalled if not needed.

Camera and Battery

The Galaxy A34 5G has a triple
camera setup on the back that consists of:

- A 48MP main camera with f/1.8
aperture, PDAF and OIS

- An 8MP ultra-wide camera with
f/2.2 aperture and 123-degree field of view

- A 5MP macro camera with f/2.4
aperture

The main camera takes sharp and
detailed photos in good lighting conditions, with accurate colours and dynamic
range. The OIS helps reduce blur and shake when taking photos or videos in low
light or while moving. The ultra-wide camera captures more of the scene in one
shot, but suffers from some distortion and noise at the edges. The macro camera
allows you to take close-up shots of small objects or textures, but requires
good lighting and steady hands.

The camera app has various modes
and features such as Pro Mode (manual controls), Night Mode (long exposure),
Portrait Mode (bokeh effect), Panorama Mode (wide-angle shots), Food Mode
(enhanced colours), Hyperlapse Mode (time-lapse videos), Slow Motion Mode
(240fps videos) and Super Slow Motion Mode (960fps videos).

The front-facing camera of the
Galaxy A34 5G is a 13MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture that takes decent selfies in
good lighting conditions, but struggles in low light or against backlighting.
The front camera also supports Portrait Mode (bokeh effect), AR Emoji (animated
stickers) and AR Doodle (drawings on your face).

The video recording capabilities of
the Galaxy A34 5G are decent but not exceptional. The phone can record up to 4K
resolution at 30fps from both the rear and front cameras, but lacks any
stabilization or HDR support at this resolution. The phone can also record up
to Full HD resolution at 60fps from both cameras with EIS support for smoother
videos.

The battery life of the Galaxy A34
5G is excellent thanks to its large 5,000mAh capacity that can easily last for
more than a day of moderate usage or up to two days of light usage on a single
charge. The phone also supports fast charging.
