Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rahman comments on MSR's arrest, says NAB laws flawed in light of Shariah
ISLAMABAD: Top Pakistani cleric and the chairperson of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rahman, on Wednesday commented on the arrest of Jang Geo Media Group Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), saying the anti-graft body's laws were flawed in light of Islamic jurisprudence and international legal system.
Talking to Geo News, Mufti Muneeb said that under Islamic law, the burden of proof lies on the accuser.
If the plaintiff has no arguments, the defendant should be asked to take the oath. He added that The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has also identified it.
"According to Islamic and international justice systems, punishment cannot be awarded if a crime cannot be proven; however, a court can only award punishment if evidence is provided," he said.
"The NAB," he added, "makes serious allegations, but does not provide evidence when the court demands it. It detains people and then says there is no evidence."
"This is a private matter, and Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman has no public office hold, so it does not fall under the jurisdiction of the NAB," he noted.
An ordinance has recently been approved to exempt the business community, Mufti Muneeb said. He mentioned, "Mir Shakeel ur Rehman is a businessman, he too should be exempt."
By detaining the Jang Geo Media Group editor-in-chief, the anti corruption watchdog "did not gain honour; in fact, it lost respect", he said, adding that MSR should be released.
Mufti Muneeb insisted, "Mir Shakeel ur Rehman is suffering from various diseases. The case against Mir Shakeel ur Rehman should be taken to court and the rest should be left to the judge."
