The number of infections in Russia is close to 100,000
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Russia reached near 100,000 on Wednesday, followed by an overnight rise of 5,841 new cases and deaths from the virus.
Russia, the world's largest country by territory, has been on lockdown since President Vladimir Putin announced in March that most public places would be closed.
This week China and Iran are surpassed by Russia in the number of confirmed cases. The statistics mean that Russia now ranks eighth in the world in the number of confirmed cases, although it has so far recorded far fewer deaths than many of the most misrable countries.
The country's Corona Virus Crisis Response Center said Wednesday that the number of cases nationwide now stands at 99,399. It said 108 people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus had died.
Putin extended the lockdown measures for another two weeks until Tuesday, May 11, while his government began preparing guidelines for a gradual easing of sanctions from May 12, as well as presenting a new emergency economic aid plan. Which is the third so far to soften the effects of the virus.
