A 21st Century Feature Phone

Big smartphones rule the world, but there's still room for voice-centric phones with traditional keyboards. Many feature phone users will soon have to upgrade their devices as carriers are about to shut down the 3G and 2G networks that older phones rely on. Fortunately, a new generation of 4G LTE feature phones has emerged.

Display

This smooth matte plastic slab is available in grey, green and white. It measures 5.17 by 2.09 by 0.54 inches and weighs just 3.5 ounces. It's slightly longer than the less expensive Nokia 225, but it's still pocketable. Underneath the plastic panel is a basic 2.4-inch, 320 x 240 pixel LCD screen that scratches easily, but doesn't break easily.

The keypad is flat and close-set. It looks beautiful, but if you have motor challenges, you'll prefer a phone with a more discrete keypad.

Operating System

KaiOS, a descendant of Firefox OS, is designed to run on such low-powered devices. It has an app store. It is very popular in Africa and India. In the US, it has appeared on Alcatel's fLIP phones, but it doesn't have the market share to attract many developers. If you are used to Android or iOS it will take some time to adjust.

Pre-installed Apps

The phone comes preloaded with (removable) apps from Facebook and YouTube.

Maninstream music apps are also missing. But you will find some joy in World Radio app that allows you to stream and listen.

The flagship app is Google Maps, which comes preloaded and provides walking, driving, and transit directions. Maps is the app you need to find a bookstore or a park. More than any other feature, its inclusion makes the 6300 a satisfying smartphone replacement.

The 6300's SMS application seamlessly handles individual text and picture messages, sorting them by recipient. Group text messages are a complete mess, arriving in several different threads and sometimes even jumbled. But the 6300 has a solution: WhatsApp. The WhatsApp client on the phone handles groups and conversations much better. The 6300 also has emoji support.

Battery life is a strength here. In tests, the 6300 managed a talk time of 7 hours and 37 minutes.
