In a groundbreaking move to combat plastic
waste and promote eco-friendly practices, a petroleum company has introduced a
remarkable concept in Karachi—a road infused with plastic.

Shell Pakistan, in collaboration with start-up
BRR Enterprises and the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) South, has taken a
momentous step towards sustainability. In an official statement released on
Monday, the company unveiled its innovative road constructed using recycled
Shell lubricant bottles.

A staggering 2.5 tonnes of discarded Shell
lubricant bottles were successfully repurposed to build a remarkable road
spanning 730 feet in length and 60 feet in width, right next to Shell House in
Karachi.

By incorporating these plastic bottles into
the asphalt road using the dry process method, Shell Pakistan has not only
reduced plastic waste significantly but has also contributed to a more
sustainable and environmentally conscious solution.

Plastic waste has long been a grave concern
due to its non-biodegradable nature and harmful effects on the environment.
Startling studies have revealed that a simple plastic bag can take up to 500
years to decompose, while a plastic bottle can persist for approximately 300
years. Acknowledging this alarming threat, Shell Pakistan's initiative aims to
address the plastic waste problem head-on and mitigate its impact on our
planet.

Plastic roads bring forth a multitude of
advantages over conventional ones. They are renowned for their enhanced
flexibility, durability, and an extended lifespan nearly three times longer
than regular roads. Moreover, the materials used in traditional road
construction tend to be costlier, whereas plastic can be obtained at a minimal
expense, leading to significant reductions in construction costs. This
innovative approach not only offers a sustainable solution but also tackles the
pressing social issue of plastic waste.

Waqar Siddiqui, the Chief Executive and
Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited, inaugurated the newly-built road
in Karachi, expressing his enthusiasm for the project. He remarked, "Using
our discarded lubricant bottles to create a road is a first for us, and the
results are truly astonishing. This innovative method not only helps combat
plastic waste but also provides an environmentally friendly option for future
infrastructure projects in Pakistan. We need to explore and embrace such
innovative solutions to build a cleaner society."

Shell Pakistan's commendable efforts in paving
the way for sustainable roads are an inspiration for environmental consciousness
and a powerful step towards a greener future. This milestone achievement sets a
promising precedent for other organizations to adopt similar initiatives,
ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable world for generations to come.
